The win was met with controversy. Scott was not announced as the winner of the race at the time. The second-place driver was initially declared the winner, but race officials \"discovered\" two hours later that Scott had not only won, but was two laps in front of the rest of the field. NASCAR awarded Scott the win afterwards, but his family never received the trophy he had earned until 2021...nearly 58 years after the race, and 31 years after Scott had passed away.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eScott's career was repeatedly impacted by racial prejudice, including being poisoned and enduring death threats. Despite all of these challenges, he continued to compete. In 2015, he was posthumously inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame and the NASCAR Hall of Fame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo continue his legacy, Scott's family created the \"Wendell Scott Foundation\". The Wendell Scott Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to serving underrepresented youth. By providing access to resource-rich STEM education, leadership mentorship, and financial scholarships, they give young people the tools to engineer their own futures.
